Task light is the one place not to compromise. Look for an adjustable head, a stable base a backpack cannot topple, and light that lands on the page instead of in the eyes.

Questions We Get
How bright should a kid's room be overall?
Aim for 20 to 30 lumens per square foot ambient, so a 12 by 12 room wants roughly 3,000 to 4,000 lumens total across the ceiling fixture and lamps. Then add a dedicated task lamp at the desk.
What color temperature is best?
Stay at 2700K to 3000K for bedrooms. Cooler light in the 4000K range is fine for a homework corner during the day but works against melatonin at night, so keep the overhead warm and dimmable.
Should the ceiling fixture be flush mount or a pendant?
Flush mount lighting for anything under a nine foot ceiling, over a play area, or in a room with a loft bed. Save pendants or chandeliers for tall ceilings and spots nobody will jump near.
