Dining Room Lighting: Where the Evening Slows Down
A dining room is the one space in a house that exists for a single activity, and that activity happens at one horizontal surface. Everything you hang, mount, or set down should be answering to that surface. The chandelier defines it, the dimmer decides what hour it feels like, and the sconces and lamps keep the room from ending at the edge of the table.
The Table's Center of Gravity
The single fixture that tells the eye where the room's center is. Diameter matters more than style here.

Diameter, the shortcut: Add the room's length and width in feet, and that number in inches is a reasonable chandelier diameter. A 12 by 14 room wants roughly 26 inches. For a linear fixture over a rectangular table, aim for half to two-thirds the table's length and keep at least six inches of table showing on each end.
Hang height, the rule: 30 to 34 inches from tabletop to the bottom of the fixture at an eight-foot ceiling, then add about three inches for every additional foot of ceiling. Lower for a low-profile fixture like the Ashe or Tachi; higher if the fixture is visually heavy and you need to see across the table.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a chandelier at all, or will recessed lighting do?
Recessed alone lights the table without marking it, which is why dining rooms with only recessed cans feel like hallways. The chandelier is doing decorative work as much as functional. A workable compromise is a low-output decorative fixture plus recessed lighting for actual illumination, which also means the chandelier can dim very low without the room going dark.
How dim is dim enough for dinner?
Most people land between 10 and 30 percent for a long meal, which is why the dimming floor on the spec sheet matters. Tachi and Dimple Dash both publish a 10 percent floor, meaning they will go genuinely low without dropping out. Fixtures that only say "dimmable" without a range are a question for us before you order.
Should the chandelier match my sconces and buffet lamps?
No, and matching everything is the most common way a dining room ends up looking like a showroom set. Pick one fixture to carry the room, then let the supporting pieces relate by warmth or material rather than repeating the form.
