Sputnik Chandeliers: Everything in Orbit

The satellite went up in 1957, and the chandelier followed it into living rooms almost immediately. A central hub, arms flung outward, a point of light at every tip: it is the most optimistic shape in lighting, and it still reads that way sixty-odd years later. Below, nine fixtures grouped by how faithfully they follow the original launch, from brass-and-bulb classics to low-profile starbursts for standard ceilings to the contemporary reinterpretations that trade nostalgia for matte finishes and integrated LED.

The Original Orbit

This is the silhouette everyone pictures: warm metal, radiating arms, and the bulb itself doing the decorating. These three keep faith with the mid-century original and let brass and glass carry the room.

  • Auge Chandelier by Z-Lite: Ten glass globes orbiting a gleaming steel center, 22.5" wide by 19" tall, each one holding a G9 lamp so the sparkle multiplies from globe to globe. Dimmable and dry rated. Mood: cocktail hour, indefinitely.
  • Cassia Chandelier by Alora Mood: A wide, airy 39.5" span at just over 16" tall, six candelabra lamps on slim steel arms in Aged Gold or Matte Black, paired with Opal or Clear glass. ELV and TRIAC dimmable, backed by a five-year warranty. Mood: fills the room, still reads like a line drawing.
  • Linnea Chandelier by Mitzi: Aged brass rods tipped with clear ribbed and swirled glass spheres in varying sizes, offered Small at 22" wide with six lights or Large at 30" wide with eight. G16.5 LED lamping, damp rated. Mood: the classic, with the texture turned up.

Starburst, Restrained

Not every ceiling is double height. These keep the radial energy but trim the drop, the body height, or both, so an 8' room gets the sparkle without anyone ducking under it.

  • Axton Chandelier by Lark: Curving steel arms carrying ten exposed G16.5 globe bulbs, 28" wide but only 18.75" tall with a 45" maximum overall height, in Black or Lacquered Brass. Mood: a small constellation over the dining table.
  • Lisette Semi Flush Mount Ceiling Light by Mitzi: The sputnik pulled up tight to the ceiling: staggered aged brass arms capped in shiny cream opal glass, 13.25" tall at 29.25" wide with six lights, or 39.75" wide with eight. Damp rated, G16.5 LED lamping. Mood: all of the orbit, none of the head-bumping.
  • Toscano Chandelier by Visual Comfort Signature: Julie Neill's 2025 design in steel and glass, branching like a tree at rest, 33" wide by 17" tall and adjustable from 24" to 55.75" overall. Five T6 candelabra LEDs, damp rated, and Title 20 compliant. Mood: a sputnik that decided to grow branches.

The New Atomic

Same geometry, new vocabulary. Integrated LED, matte and smoked finishes, forged steel, and clustered glass take the sputnik out of the vintage shop and put it in a contemporary room without losing the burst.

  • Nova Chandelier by Roll and Hill: McKenzie & Keim in brass, aluminum, and glass, handmade to order in the USA. The 6-light spans 33" and the 9-light 45", both on integrated LED at 2700K and 90+ CRI (2100 or 2900 lumens), with TRIAC, ELV, and 0-10V dimming in Brushed Brass, Matte Black, or Matte Ivory. Mood: the instant of the explosion, held perfectly still.
  • Olympus Starburst Pendant Light by Hubbardton Forge: Handcrafted steel made in the USA, twelve arms bursting out to 33.2" wide, each tipped with a glowing orb. Eleven finishes from Black, Ink, and Dark Smoke to Modern Brass and Vintage Platinum, height adjustable to 77.3" overall and damp rated. Mood: a sparkler, rendered in steel.
  • Shine Chandelier by Regina Andrew: Seventeen clustered glass orbs on a Natural Brass or Polished Nickel frame, 33.75" across and 22.75" tall, adjustable to 71.5" overall. Candelabra lamping, dry rated. Mood: mid-century glam at full volume.

Sputnik Chandeliers FAQs

What size sputnik fits over my dining table?

Aim for a diameter about 12" narrower than the table's width, and hang the bottom 30" to 34" above the tabletop. The radiating arms make a sputnik feel bigger than its measured width, so when you are between two sizes, the smaller one is usually right.

Can I use a sputnik with an 8' ceiling?

Yes. Choose a semi-flush version like the Lisette at 13.25" tall, or a short-bodied chandelier like the Nova or Axton on a minimal drop. Over a table the height matters less; over a walkway, keep at least 7' of clearance beneath the lowest arm.

Can a sputnik go in a bathroom or covered outdoor space?

Only damp-rated ones. On this page that means the Linnea, Lisette, Toscano, Nova, and Olympus. The Auge, Cassia, Axton, and Shine are dry rated and belong in interior rooms away from moisture. Always check the product specifications to confirm the fixture's rating before installing it in a moisture-prone location.
