Bath Wall Lights: The Only Mirror That Tells the Truth
The bathroom is the one room where lighting has a job to do on your face. Get it wrong and the mirror lies: shadows under the eyes, color that reads green, a shave you have to redo in the car. Get it right and the room becomes the most flattering three square feet in the house. Below, explore where fixtures should be placed relative to the mirror, because that decision matters more than the fixture itself.
Flanking the Mirror
Light from the sides fills in the hollows that overhead light carves out. A pair at face height is the single best thing you can do for a vanity.
- Capalino Wall Light by Visual Comfort Studio: Drew and Jonathan's glowing white linen cylinder on a contrasting steel backplate, 5" wide by 12" tall in Brushed Steel, Midnight Black, or Satin Brass. Two candelabra sockets, dimmable, damp rated and Title 24 compliant. Mood: quiet confidence that works with multiple design styles.
- Allavo LED Wall Light by Cerno: A slender solid wood and brushed aluminum frame around a diffused panel, made in the United States, in three vertical lengths from 21.3" to 39.3" and six metal-and-wood pairings. TRIAC, ELV, and 0-10V dimming, 90 CRI at 3000K, damp rated and ADA compliant. Mood: bring a warm wood material to a cold room.
- Henri Bath Wall Light by Z-Lite: A structured steel and glass shade with a crystal rod detail in Brushed Nickel, Chrome, Matte Black, or Modern Gold, 5.1" wide by 10.2" tall. Dimmable and damp rated. Mood: a small traditional shaded fixture.
The Bar Above
When there is no wall left beside the mirror, the horizontal bar above it is the answer. Choose a wide one, mount it high, and let the diffuser do the softening.
- Spec LED Bath Vanity Light by Maxim Lighting: A 1.75"-deep aluminum and acrylic profile in six finishes, from 18" to 48" wide, with fixed 3000K or three and five-CCT selectable options at 90 CRI and up to 2240 lumens. ELV dimming at 120V, damp rated, ADA and Title 24 compliant, Energy Star. Mood: simple and defined.
- Mini Vogue LED Bath Bar by Modern Forms: A slim 3"-tall die-cast aluminum bar in Black, Brushed Nickel, or Chrome at 19.75", 25.75", or 37.75" wide, with field-switchable 2700K, 3000K, or 3500K and up to 2363 lumens at 90 CRI. ELV to 10 percent, damp rated, ADA, Energy Star Certified. Mood: minimal, and you pick the warmth.
- Fino LED Bath Vanity Light by Sonneman Lighting: A tubular optical acrylic diffuser in a sleek metal frame, only 0.75" deep, at 18" to 40" in Polished Chrome, Satin White, Satin Chrome, or Satin Black. TRIAC and ELV dimming, 90 CRI, damp rated and ADA compliant, with a matching wall plate kit available. Mood: a cylinder of light, adding rounded depth.
Small Bath, Big Manners
Powder rooms and 30-inch vanities need fixtures that behave. Shallow projection, modest footprint, and enough output to still be useful.
- Kamden 1-Light LED Bath Wall Light by Visual Comfort Modern: A hand-polished square acrylic cube in a die-cast frame, just 5" by 4.3", mountable vertically or horizontally, in Chrome, Natural Brass, Nightshade Black, or Satin Nickel. 759 lumens at 90 CRI and 3000K, ELV and TRIAC at 120V, damp rated and Title 24 rated. Mood: one small cube, precisely made.
- Fuse LED Bath Vanity Light by WAC Lighting: Steel and polycarbonate with a translucent diffuser, 5.5" tall with a 3" projection, at 16", 27", or 37" wide, delivering 1025 to 2025 lumens at 90 CRI and 3000K. TRIAC and ELV to 5 percent, damp rated, ADA, Title 24, and Energy Star Certified. Mood: LED light from a low profile.
- Oxford Bath Wall Light by Visual Comfort Signature: Chapman and Myers in metal and frosted glass, a narrow 3.75" to 4.25" wide with only 4" of projection, at 12", 18.5", or 24" tall across five finishes from Antique Nickel to Polished Nickel. Mood: a slim vintage column.
Mirror Placement Guide
The mounting numbers matter more than the fixture, and they are simple.

Fixture width for a bar: Roughly 75 percent of the mirror width, and never wider than the vanity. A 36" mirror wants a 24" to 30" bar.
Why side beats top: A fixture directly overhead casts your brow ridge and nose down onto your own face. Two sources at eye level cancel each other's shadows. If you only do one thing on this page, flank the mirror.
The CRI note: Every fixture here is 90 CRI or better, which matters more in a bathroom than anywhere else in the house. Below about 90, skin tones shift and makeup applied at the mirror looks different in daylight. For grooming, 90 CRI at 3000K is the reliable combination; 2700K flatters but slightly warms, and 4000K reads clinical.
Frequently Asked Questions
Damp rating or wet rating for a bathroom?
Damp is correct for a vanity, and every fixture here is damp rated. Wet rating is only required inside a shower or tub enclosure, or within three feet of a shower head, which is what our Recessed Shower Lighting collection covers.
Can I use a bath bar sideways as a vertical sconce?
Only when the manufacturer says so. The Kamden explicitly permits vertical or horizontal mounting, and the Allavo is designed vertically. Rotating a bar not rated for it can put the driver in a position it was not designed to drain heat from, and it voids the listing.
How many lumens does a vanity actually need?
Plan for roughly 1,600 to 2,000 lumens total at a standard vanity, more in a windowless room. A pair of sconces at 800 lumens each gets you there; a single 24" bar at 1,250 lumens does not, which is the case for layering rather than choosing.
