Start Above the Ceiling

The housing is the part nobody photographs and everybody depends on. Choose it for your ceiling conditions first, meaning insulation, plenum depth, and voltage. Choose for looks second.

The Part You Actually See

The trim is the finished face of the fixture. It controls glare, sets the beam, and decides whether the ceiling reads as clean or busy. Baffles soften the opening, gimbals aim the light, and trimless details make the hole disappear. Wet-rated versions go where water does.

Choosing the Light Itself

Two downlights with the same aperture can make a room feel completely different. The difference is in the light source: its color quality, whether it warms as it dims, and whether you can tune it later. These three take very different approaches.

Recessed Planning Guide

Three decisions do most of the work: aperture size, location rating, and beam. Get those right for each room before you choose a finish.

Spacing: For general lighting, a common starting point is to space downlights at roughly half the ceiling height. In a room with 8' ceilings, that means about 4' apart. Keep the first row 2' to 3' from the walls.

Wall washing: Place wall wash trims about 2' to 3' out from the wall. Closer than that produces scallops, and farther loses the even wash.

Color temperature: Use one color temperature per room. Mixing 2700K and 4000K downlights in the same space reads as a mistake, not a design choice.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does IC rated and airtight actually mean?

An IC-rated fixture can touch building insulation safely. An airtight fixture limits air leaking between the room and the attic. Insulated ceilings need both, and California's Title 24 energy code requires airtight fixtures in most residential work. The Elco, Aether Atomic, ENTRA, Pivot, and Ocularc housings carry both ratings.

Do I need a housing, or can I go canless?

Canless fixtures like the Pivot and Starfish mount directly into the drywall cutout with a junction box. That makes them a natural fit for remodels and shallow ceilings. Traditional housings take more planning, but they let you change trims and modules later without opening the ceiling. They also support precision options like trimless and wall wash.

Can recessed lights go inside a shower?

Yes, if the fixture is wet rated in its installed configuration. That often depends on the trim. ENTRA, for example, is wet rated only with its shower trim. Damp-rated fixtures are fine elsewhere in the bathroom but not in the direct spray zone.

What is the difference between dim-to-warm and tunable white?

Dim-to-warm, as on the Ocularc and the Aether Atomic warm-dim version, shifts automatically toward amber as you dim, the way incandescent bulbs did. Tunable white, as on the Starfish and the selectable Pivot, lets you set the color temperature yourself, independently of brightness. Dim-to-warm needs no app and no extra decisions. Tunable white gives you more control in exchange for more setup.
