Outdoor Ceiling Lights: Shelter, Lit From Above
A covered porch is a room without walls, and the ceiling fixture is the only thing standing between it and the dark. The right one does quiet work: it flatters the door, it marks the threshold, and it survives whatever the weather brings. Below, we share fixtures to consider based on how much ceiling you have and how much weather it sees.
The Covered Porch, Considered
Low ceilings and short overhangs call for something that tucks up tight. These three sit close to the plane and still throw enough light to read a house number by.

Weathering Well

Rule of thumb: if you can stand under the fixture during a storm and stay dry, damp rated is acceptable. If rain ever touches the ceiling plane, specify wet.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much overhang do I need before a damp-rated fixture is safe?
Look for at least two to three feet of horizontal cover on all sides, more if the porch faces prevailing wind. On the Bay Area coast, where fog and wind-driven mist travel sideways, we recommend wet-rated fixtures even under cover.
Flush mount or semi-flush on an eight-foot porch ceiling?
Flush mount. Anything hanging more than about six inches becomes a head-height hazard on a standard eight-foot ceiling. Save the Bergamot Station and Erlenmeyer for nine feet or taller.
Can I run an outdoor ceiling light indoors?
Yes. Wet and damp ratings are a floor, not a ceiling, so the Nut and the Trenton work beautifully in bathrooms, laundry rooms, and mudrooms where humidity is a factor.
