The Reading Chair's Companion

Task light wants two things: enough output and the ability to aim it. Each of these puts the light exactly where the page is.

Sculpture That Happens to Glow

Some lamps earn their spot before you turn them on. Ceramic, crystal, and stone read as objects first and light sources second.

The Low Lamp Hour

After eight in the evening, overhead light is an intrusion. These sit low, run warm, and make a room feel like it belongs to you.

Lamp Height Guide

One rule covers most of it: when you are seated in the spot the lamp serves, the bottom edge of the shade should sit at or just below your eye level, roughly 40 to 42 inches off the floor. Everything below is that rule, translated.

The pair rule: Flanking lamps on either side of a sofa or bed should match in height within an inch. Different bases are fine, differing heights read as a mistake.

The overhang rule: The shade should not extend past the front edge of the table. A 17" shade like the Toulon's wants a table at least 18 inches deep.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a portable lamp really light anything?

It can light a mood, not a room. The Panthella at 456 lumens is roughly a third of a standard 60W-equivalent bulb, and the Marni at 100 to 125 lumens is candle territory. Use them as the third or fourth layer in a room that already has task and ambient light, and use them where cords are impossible: a dinner table, a bathtub ledge, a balcony.

Why are so many of these still incandescent?

Because a shaded ceramic lamp taking an E26 socket lets you choose the bulb, and bulb choice is real design control. Put a 2700K LED in the Toulon or the Parkwood, dim it, and you get exactly the light a fixed integrated module would have decided for you.

Task lamp for a reading chair, or a floor lamp?

If there is a side table, a task table lamp is the better answer: it puts the source closer to the page with less spill onto the ceiling. If there is no table, that is what our Reading Floor Lamps collection is for.
